Does The Artisan Boutique Hotel in Hanoi live up to its name and art deco-style business card? First impressions don’t disappoint: the reception area is spacious and stylishly decorated — Tiffany-style lamps always go down well – and the rooms follow through.
The hotel was refurbished in 2012, rather than being a new build, and remnants of the previous tenancy remain in the hallways, which don’t have the same arty feel as reception or the guest rooms, but who cares about hallways, we ask? The rooms are fabulous and that’s what counts. The hotel offers four types of room at different price points: standard, deluxe city view, suite city view and a penthouse. Standards go for $30/37 (single/double) and deluxes are $40/47 (single/double).
Room decor is stylish and distinctive without being over the top: signature walls are adorned with patterned wallpaper, headboards and soft furnishings are upholstered with earthy green velvet, modern art and lacquer painting adorn the walls and vases are ready to be filled with fresh flowers.
Bathrooms have been refurbished to a high standard, with mosaic tiling, modern fittings and big baths in the more expensive rooms.
Standard and deluxe rooms are similar in style but the deluxe are larger and have balconies with wide-ranging views, whereas standards only have a small window overlooking the stairwell — but it’s a window nonetheless. Deluxe rooms also have the option of two beds rather than just one double. Suites are similar to the deluxe but larger again and with double-glazing for extra peace and quiet… plus a Jacuzzi bath. Whereas complimentary water is provided in all rooms, the suite also comes with fresh fruit.
But if you really want to go for it, head for the penthouse. At the top of the building (of course) it has a 360-degree view of Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem lake and a lounge/dining area and kitchen — perfect for longer stays or when you just want to splash out and have some space to relax.
Staff are some of the most helpful, friendly and professional we’ve met and breakfast is taken in their Artisan Buon Dua Le (Vietnamese for gossiping with friends) cafe next door — an airy space with an inviting breakfast menu.
Artisan Boutique Hotel is on Hang Hanh Street, which is superbly located for Hoan Kiem Lake, St Joseph’s Cathedral and the best shopping in Old Quarter, as well as numerous dining and nightlife options along Bao Khanh.
Finally — it’s great value. The rates mentioned above include breakfast and were quoted to us as a walk-in — less than the rack rate but higher than online promotions. At those prices it compares very favourably with similar quality options in Old Quarter and is highly recommended.
