Not everyone wants to stay amid the chaos of Hanoi’s Old Quarter — some prefer to stay in the chaos elsewhere in the city. If you’re looking for an alternative location then Wild Lotus Hotel, next to West Lake, is an excellent mid- to top-range option.
Wild Lotus Hotel is on Xuan Dieu Street, in the heart of expat land and therefore well located for a number of good bars and restaurants as well as wine shops, grocery stores, delis and boutiques. Being next to the lake, it’s also the perfect spot from which to start a lakeside walk or cycle — the Hanoi Bicycle Collective is a five-minute walk away — or to just enjoy the view. But its location doesn’t mean you’ll be missing out on the local action: a short walk takes you into a maze of back alleyways, neighbourhood markets and street food stalls. It’s less than five kilometres from Old Quarter, too, so it costs just a few dollars in a taxi to get there.
The hotel offers four standards of room: superior, deluxe, suite and royal. All rooms are decorated in a similar modern Vietnamese, style, with up-to-date bathrooms, LCD televisions and minibars. Superior rooms are in the centre of the hotel, so they lack windows, and are quite small but not cramped. Deluxe rooms are larger, with twin beds and large windows overlooking the small lake and pagoda to the rear of the hotel. Suite rooms contain two double beds and a view of West Lake, with a small — unusable except for having a sneaky smoke — balcony.
Room rates range from US$55++ to US$120++ but can be negotiated down slightly or look for online deals. If you’re thinking of going for a deluxe I’d recommend paying the bit extra for the suite — both for the extra space and the lake view. Prices are on a par with similar hotels in Old Quarter, such as Golden Lotus and Golden Rice.
Overall the hotel is smart, clean and comfortable, with friendly staff. It’s offerings are only slightly let down by breakfast, which is just one choice off a basic menu — I’d expect a buffet, or at least a more exciting selection, for this price range.
Tours can also be arranged through the hotel and airport pick up is free for stays of three nights or more.
