Review: Mayana Hotel, Da Nang

Published by at 2:14 am under Da Nang

Mayana is a relatively new Da Nang hotel and will be a certain hit for those looking for a cheap bolthole in the city but still with plenty of amenities and an occasional flourish — who doesn’t love velvet wing chairs, after all?

The grand lobby.

The grand lobby.

Right in the heart of town — you’re just  a few minutes from the fashionable river strip of Bach Dang Street, the dragon bridge and the pink Catholic cathedral – and overlooking the old, new and crazy Han Market traffic, Mayana might look like a typical towering tubehouse of a Vietnamese hotel but it’s got windows aplenty — and a lift. The breakfast area has respectable city views and a pretty reception welcomes you on arrival, with those chairs plus crystal chandeliers. The staff are a standout, too.

Rooms, although not huge, are air-con and kitted out with fitted wardrobes, comfortable bed, safe, TV, the biggest selection of in-room instant noodle snacks you could ever want for, cotton bed linen and a grand marble (of course – see Marble Mountain down the road) and glass wet room inventively designed to make the most of space and time by popping the toilet in the shower cubicle.

Bed and noodles.

Bed and noodles.

For $21 this hotel is fabulous, especially when compared to the nearby options of Happy Day and One-Star Hotel (insert witty comment here), which for a higher price tag miss out on important details like a window and, er, beautifully festive Christmas wreatsh that decorate each of Mayana’s hotel room doors. Mayana also has a business centre — or a couple of shiny computers at reception.

The perfect multi task bathroom.

The perfect multi task bathroom.

Like most well-located city pads sans restaurants breakfast is the only time you get to clock the other guests and soak up the atmosphere.

During our stay the awesome waiting staff outnumbered guests by two to one, which comes with the advantage of a respectfully quick serving time for coffee and badly needed carbohydrates in the form of spaghetti bolognese – the token Western ‘breakfast’ option from an otherwise rather impressive buffet that should set you up to see the Da Nang sights for the day. Staff get full kudos for being able to do this with good humour and without pausing in their tuneful rendition of Justin Timberlake’s ‘Bring Sexy Back’ despite dark looks from the loud American church group, who were discussing where in the city they might find the Lord.
