Totally unrelated to anything here, but pretty big news in the travel guide publishing industry today -- the BBC has just purchased 75% of Lonely Planet. Full story here.

I doubt it will do us travellers much good. I felt for some time that the LP had lost it's way; some of their more recent guides look like the wording had been obtained from a sales bouchure and some guides totally uneccessary as it related to a totally tourisy area that backpapers wouldn't be seen dead in!

I fear it will move the LP guides away from the backpaper to the beeter heeled market. However, I just 'Rough Guides' now anyway.
