What's best? Lonely Planet guides for each individual country or the regional SE Asia guide?
Is the extra weight worth carrying a guide book for each individual country?

Depends how long you're planning on spending in each country. If you're in country for anything more than a fleeting glance, I find the country-specific guides far better. Bear in mind it is pretty easy to buy second-hand/photocopied guides once you're in the region, so you may not want to buy brand new ones for all the countries before you leave.
