Due to ongoing problems of spam from Vietnam, we've decided to display a small Vietnamese flag next to all posts made from Vietnamese IP addresses.
This is not to say all posts from Vietnam are spam -- of course they're not!
However, when you see a post from a Travelfish member saying they're in New York planning a trip to Vietnam and looking for a recommendation for a Ha Long Bay tour operator, then if the flag appears, it means that they're probably (the IP address test is not 100%) in Vietnam and their post can most likely be ignored.
While I'm at it, businesses that spam travel websites need to do so because the product they sell is crap. Because they're flogging a rubbish product the only way they can, say, get people on boats, is to forever falsely plug their business online with fake testimonials.
Around 95% of the accounts we ban on Travelfish are from Hanoi- and Hue-based travel agents -- the vast majority of which are plugging tours to Ha Long Bay.
If you'd like to see a sample of how the flag and IP address thing works, see this thread for an example.
Sorry. one more note -- if you see the flag appearing on posts you have made, but you were not in Vietnam when you made them, let me know. As I said the IP test isn't 100% accurate. Note though if you're writing posts in Thailand now, but made some posts a week ago when you were in Vietnam, then the latter will have the flag, the former will not.
Hope that makes sense.
