Hello all,
I was planning to go diving in Ko Tao but I recently read a post where someone described it as 'not fantastic' which made me very sad (I would kill to see a whale shark!). I know this is a subjective question, but where do you believe the most exceptional place to dive in these four countries is? I have done my open water and about five or six fairly normal/plain dives in Europe (bar one where I got to see lots of big grouper).

Hey, I have not been diving in Cambodia, Viet Nam or Laos (???). But I have been diving in Koh Lipe and Koh Lanta. I don't think you could go wrong with either place. If you want higher end places and more development and more choice of sites and accomodation the Lanta might be for you. Lipe was a bit more layed back and much smaller. More "backpackers" and less families. Beautiful corals, plenty of marine life and great boats with both places. I have also heard that Koh Tao left a lot to be desired.
I can't remember the name of either operator I dove with! But stayed at the Narima on Lanta and they have a dive cmpany out of their hotel. Was a great outfit. www.thenarima.com And if you are on
Lipe - remember - he option of a third dive that was offered...never happened!
I'm sure it'll be great where ever you decide.
Good luck!

Thanks very much! Oops, I briefly forgot that Laos is landlocked... Will those places be OK to dive at while I am visiting, July and August? (In a few days!). Any other suggestions, anyone?

I have been diving in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines and Cambodia.
Best-of-the-best, of course Sipadan island in Malaysia. But if we stuck only to the countries you mentioned, my rating:
1. Similans, Koh Bon, Richelieu Rock - Thailand
2. Koh Tao and Koh Lipeh - Thailand
3. Koh Tang and Koh Rong Samloem - Cambodia
4. Nha Trang - Vietnam
