Hi midwestmimi, welcome to Travelfish. Take a look through the listings for all the countries you're going to visit — you'll find plenty of clean and decent and safe places for your budget, with good reviews + backed up by Travelfish members' recent reviews about these places.

Also check out the individual pages about those places you mentioned, for a clearer picture than any of us here can give you.

    For information about transport, use:
http://www.seat61.com/ -- for info about trains
    http://www.talesofasia.com/ -- for overland bus/train information

You'll find that bus and train travel throughout Thailand is VERY decent and fast and cheap — and also that the range of budget airlines available in Thailand is excellent. For Burma, and Laos, you'll be bus-ing mostly.
