If you're in Burma at the moment (or about to arrive), this might be of interest. There was an article in today's local Yangon paper talking about a maiden flight that was just launched by Myanma Airways for the Yangon - Nyaung U ( Bagan ) route.

They also mentioned a special promo fares that will be available from 14-31 October to celebrate the launch, as follows:

Yangon - Nyaung U (Bagan) : US$55 (A huge savings compared to Air Bagan at $245)
    Nyaung U - Mandalay: US$29 ($115 with Bagan Air)
    Yangon - Mandalay: US$59

(These prices are for foreigners; locals are quoted prices in kyat.)

I was asking the guy at the hotel about where I could book flights, and mentioned the deal, and he seemed to already be aware of it. He's going to organise something for me tomorrow.

I had a look on the airline website, but it's a dog's breakfast. And my laptop reported is as an untrustworthy site. There was no mention of the above deal, but they did mention another:

"Every Foreigner can get the chance one ticket free if he buys tickets in the number of 15 pieces for the flight schedule of Yangon-Nyaung oo- Mandalay."

Gold star if you can figure it out!

I have since learned that this airline iisgovernment owned, something I didn't appreciate last night.

Now it becomes a tricky decision... the savings are pretty good. My hotel is checking prices for a few other airlines.

FWIW I mentioned this deal to a friend who is pretty familiar with Burma (he's an Lonely Planet writer who has covered the country in the past) and he said there is no way on earth he would fly this airline -- he termed it a "danger discount".

Do report back on how you fare busylizzy!

I ended up booking on Air Yangon - $117.

I should do more research before posting - just got excited about the cheaper price. Burma is going to kill my budget!

    Thanks for the info busylizzy!

I will be in Burma from mid-November and am currently trying to sort out flights with the help of a local agent.

Safe travels and please keep the tips coming :)
