Myanmar: 3 week itinerary for March

Posted by Zuzu29 on 29/1/2014 at 23:45

Hi, We are planning a trip to Myanmar in March 2014 and would love to get some feedback on our itinerary and options.

March 3: Arrive Mandalay
March4-5: Explore Mandalay

Here is where i'd love some feedback...

March 6:

Plan A: bus or boat? to Monywa and Pakokku for 1 night each on the way to Bagan
Plan B: go to Pyin Oo Lwin and Hsipaw for 1 night each then back to Mandalay, take bus or boat? to Bagan
Plan C: just go straight to Bagan by boat

March 8/9-11: Bagan

March 11/12: Bus to Kalaw

March 12/13: Kalaw

March 13-15: Kalaw to Inle Lake (booking with Golden Lily-made ahead of time or just in Kalaw?)

March 16-18/19: Inle Lake

March 19/20: Inle Lake to Bago

March 20/21: Bago

March 21-24: Yangon

Just a few questions:
1. Is March still considered to be a busy time?
2. I was going to book accommodations at Mandalay, Bagan, Inle Lake, Yangon - is this a good idea?
3. How important is it to book transportation ahead of time?

Any other advice or recommendations is greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time!

Hi,

I would suggest you an itinerary as below:

March 3: Arrive Mandalay
March 4: Mandalay - 5: Explore Mandalay Ancient capitals (Ava, Amarapura)
March 6: Bus to Monywa and Pakokku for 1 night each on the way to Bagan
March 7: Monywa to Bagan
March 8/9-11: Bagan
March 11/12: Bus to Kalaw
March 12/13: Kalaw
March 13-15: Kalaw to Inle Lake
March 16-18/19: Inle Lake
March 19/20: Inle Lake to Bago
March 20/21: Bago
March 21-24: Yangon

March is still a bit crowded, of course less packed than January and February. You can now book online via many channels such as Agoda. For the transportation, I think you should have all the services prearranged prior to your arrival as the March period still easily fluctuates.

Cheers,
Dan

Hi

March is not too much busy then February. But for the Accommodation you can book via online. But some of small Hotel is still difficult to make reservation via online.

If you don't take flight for transportation you can buy the ticket easy going.

Have a nice trip!!!!

Thanks for your advice Dan and 'htun1997'.

Also, do you know whether ATM's are readily available, or do we still need cash on hand before arriving?

Best,
Zuzu

Well, there are many ATMs available in the major cities such Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay and Inle Lake. Some big hotels have already equipped, too.

If you just travel these places, you do not need to concern about the cash shortage. And if travel to the remoted areas, it is best to exchange the Dollar cash into local Kyat then bring along in case you pay for the food and personal expenses there.

Enjoy you trip, Zuzu29!

For transportation, I think you should book ahead if you are thinking of flying. Here are some flight schedules and information that I think might be helpful.
