hi,
my girlfriend and i will be passing through stung treng around about the start of august and we are looking to get to siem reap from there so as to avoid having to go phnom pehn-siem reap-phnom pehn? as we are heading for vietnam from cambodia we'd like to try and avoid having to drive up and down the same route twice so if anyone has any advice on getting to siem reap from stung treng, it would be appreciated.
thanks,
shane

As far as I know, there aren't any passable direct roads up there in the north (or at least no transportation available on them if there are some) so you'll need to go as far south as Kompong Cham. You can change buses there though, so no need to go all the way to PP.

Hi,
I traveled from Kratie to Siam Reap, which I think is easier than from Stung Treng . Buses leave every day to Siam Reap for about 5/6 US$. It does go a long way on the road towards Phonon Penn, but you change buses (all included in the price) and head up north to Siam Reap.
I did hear a bad story about trying to leave Stung Treng but I cant give you any first hand info about it, however, Kratie is not too bad a place for a stop over & you can get to see the Irrawaddy dolphin.
Kratie town itself has unmade roads and first impressions can be off putting, but the accommodation is clean & cheap (we paid 6 US$ for a double fan room) & clean and there are half a dozen good restaurants there. Unless you have any compelling reason to be at Stung Treng, I would look at the Kratie option. (We stayed there for 5 days!)
Have a good trip!
Mike

Now there is a brand new road from Stung Treng to Tbang Menchey, take the ferry across the Mekhong in S T and there it is. Probably no public transort yet.

You can go direct to Siem Reap from Stung Treng without having to go through PP. The route will take you as far south as Kampong Cham, then it will turn north to Siem Reap. It's a major bus route so easy to get a ticket.
I'm taking a guess that you'll be coming from Laos? If so, don't stop at Stung Treng (it's a dump), stop in Kratie instead. This is what we've just done.
