Hello everyone,
I have a break of 12 days and wants to travel to South East Asia. Departure: 10 May!
I'm based in HK at the moment and checked the flights fares, best deal for me would be to go to Hanoi or Pnom Penh through Singapore..
I have only 12 days.. Short!
For Vietnam, my plan would be to start in Hanoi & surroundings to Saigon.. I am a bit afraid it's gonna be short though, then thinking to stop in mid-way and go reverse? What do you think?
For Cambodia, as I believe it's more easy to go from a place to another, do you think for a 12 days trip, it will be more appropriate..
So many things to see, I cannot make up my mind.
The idea is I want to maximize the holidays, I'm not afraid of the road also as it's part of the journey but don't need to be on the road also everyday ;)
Thanks a lot to share your opinions..

Well, if you're in Cambodia in Phnom penh. It takes you 3 hours to get to sihanoukville or 6 (5) hours to siem reap. so you won't be on the bus for a long time and got plenty to see (ankor tempels: siem reap, tool sleng museum phnom penh, beach sihanoukville). i'd go for this trip as I did it in a month time last year but practicly spend 2 weeks at the beach doing nothing and a week getting wasted in phonm penh, so 12 days should do it fo sure.
For vietnam, such a beatifull country where you can get stuck at some places for a while. with 12 days you got Hanoi, a boat trip to Halong Bay, with the bus down to Hoi an for a few days and maybe get to Dalat as well. I'd been there for 2.5 months on my trip and it's way more relaxing that way. I'd prefer cambodia for only 12 days but if you can manage a 1 month holiday I'd say you head for vietnam and do it all the way down to saigon.
greets

12 days is certainly not long enough to explore the North and then go down to Saigon and see anything there - or much in between. Rather, you could spend the time in the north only, Halong Bay - Hanoi - and Sapa. A few days in each location and a little elbow room for if you hear about another interesting place in the area. If in the future you expect to have a longer holiday, I'd save a bigger tour of Vietnam for that.
Cambodia is a good option if you want to concentrate on the temples scene - it depends on what you want to see. The post by svendj above gives some good options. I haven't been to Cambodia yet, but would set myself up for 2-3 weeks to touch on the area.
I'm surprised you can't find a better deal from HK to Hanoi - direct rather than through Singapore. Many in China find good deals by ignoring the HK airport and flying out of Shenzhen instead. A short commute there and you can save big on airfare into SE Asia.
