I don't think you'd feel very safe if you walk around with a big load of cash. Whether it's US or AUS dollars. Use your card and withdraw bigger amounts ($300-$500) because at the best bank, ANZ Royal, there is a fee per withdrawal ($5) and not a percentage.
Even if the exchange rate would be better in Australia you'd probably only gain $20 or so if you changed $2000. Ask yourself if it's worth $20 if that money got stolen or robbed...
