based on a few reports I saw that Sandflies were a problem on Koh Rong - Is this still the case? Has anyone been recently?

That's the pay off for undisturbed beaches, I'm afraid! Less well-trodden sand gives the eggs a chance to hatch. Beaches on the mainland don't have the same problem, but that's because there are many more visitors ...
I'd recommend some good insect repellant and make sure you put in on in the morning before you relax for a day on the beach. Personally, a few bites weren't enough to stop me enjoying the white sand, beautiful views and peacefulness.

I believe they manufacture DEET based products to combat such things as sandflies.
