Travel from Phnom Penh to HCMC?

  • BaznChaz

What are the best methods of travel between Phnom Penh to HCMC?

We have 3 days of travel time before arriving into HCMC and flying out to Hanoi on Wednesday 26th December 2007.

I would appreciate any comments/suggestions on this topic.

I have looked at teh most obvious being the airline Vietnam Airline, which is costing £78 pounds each per person and if there is a better option and slightly cheaper, that would be preferred.

    Thanks in Advance

There's four main ways to travel between the two:

    a) Air
    b) Bus - cost swings from around US$6-15 depending on the company. takes most of the day
    c) River, bus combo - catch speedboat to Chau Doc (takes half a day) then either hang out there or take a bus to Saigon (5-6 hours).
    d) Organised Mekong Delta tour picking up in PP depositing in HCM. Cost varies tremendously as there's a bunch of different options and operators. A bare basic overnight trip will cost around US$20.

    Thanks for the info somtam2000

Also, is it possible to arrange a trip to travel within a day, as time is of essence and we need to be in HCMC for the 26th December as we are looking to fly into Hanoi on that day.

We were goingt o fly into HCMC but if its possible by boat, that would be even better?

    Thanks in Advance

You could do it in a day, but you'd be best to do the whole trip by bus. The boat will only take you as far as Chau Doc, afterwhich you'll need to arrange bus transport anyways -- I'd expect to get into Saigon early evening if you tried to do it by boat then bus.

Would we need to book the bus trip from UK or is it easy to make the booking in Phnom Penh?

Also, the boat ride to Chau Doc and then Boat ride to HCMC sounds fun...Do you know how much this will cost?

    Thanks in Advance

    hey BaznChaz,

u can try mekong express (coach). very comfy (well, if you're not 6'3") and reliable. it would cost usd12, if i can remember correctly. frenly members of staff. i dun think that u need to book the tickect in advance, but if in doubt, please do so. the saigon sales office is situated around the pham ngu lao area (just by the main road).

    Hi BaznChaz

We travelled with Capitol Tours - PP pickup at 8.30am, bus left @ 9.00 - arrived HCMC around 4-ish (used this company several times - professional - no complaints).

Which ever way you decide to travel don't book from the UK - wait until you are in country - you will only be paying commission to a million middlemen for a service which is readily available. There are travel agents everywhere, all advertising their rates on sandwich boards, so wait and compare before committing yourself.

We spent 3 days on the Mekong between HCMC and PP (your journey in reverse) which cost US$42? each (can cost as little as $26 but lots of time on bus!) but we wanted the most time on the river. Boat time costs more than Bus time. I absolutely recommend this if you can squeeze it in.

    Travel well

Thanks to everyone for the comments and suggestions, i have now decided not to fly and will most probably go with Capital Tours.

However, i would prefer to travel by boat/bus if possible, so if anyone can recommend a good tour company, that would be most appreciated.

    Thanks in Advance

    Hi again BaznChaz

If you are in PP you will find either Capitol/ Sing/Mekong tours - at least one will offer you the trip you require. Arrange your journey a day in advance and you shouldn't have any problems.

    Ciao
