I'm going to be in Cambodia in July. At this time of year, would it be better to take the roads or a boat from Battambang to Siem Reap (in terms of time/comfort, I'm assuming the boat is prettier). Also, people have noted safety issues with the boats, are these at all avoidable?
Thanks,
david

Actually, after looking around a bit more, i'm pretty convinced that roads are the way to go.

The road trip is faster and more comfortable, the boat trip can be very beautiful, but safety issues (the boats regularly break down/run around and overloading is the norm) and discomfort dissuade many.

are the safety and comfort issues less likely to be problematic at the height of wet season? We will be making our first trip to Cambodia in October this year, and are interested in this boat trip, either to/from Battambang>Siem Reap.

Hi CunningMcFar,
That damn double posting -- I thought we fixed that!
In the height of wet season you'll have a lot less problems with the boat running aground, but you'll still have overloading issues -- it really comes down to a judgement call on the day -- if the boat looks overloaded, get off and either try the next day or take a share taxi.
