Hi
I am travelling to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam in Sept/Oct 06 and I would like to travel overland from Cambodia (Phnom Penh) to Vietnam (Saigon) via the Mekong Delta. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way, timeframes (how long I should allow) and any tips generally would be appreciated.
Also, what are some good/recommended backpacker/budget hotel options in Phom Penh and Siem Reap?
Thanks Clare

Hi Clare,
Welcome to Travelfish!
The best way (IMO) is the speedboat from Phnom Penh down the Mekong to Chau Doc -- the trip takes about 4-5 hours -- cost is around $15/head. There is a cheaper boat that some guesthouses in PP promote, but it is quite a bit slower. There is also a new boat running from Phnom Penh straight to Can Tho -- you can read more about it here.
From Chau Doc you can overnight, then onwards by bus to Can Tho which has some excelent floating markets that are really worth visiting, then onto Saigon etc etc.
Take a look in the Phnom Penh and Siem Reap sections on the site for accommodation tips -- there's lots in there!
