What is the best and cheapest way to use a mobile phone in Cambodia? I am with Optus in Australia, they have told me it's very expensive to use International Roaming. What does everybody else do? Can anybody help? Much appreciated.

Cheapest solution is to buy a local sim card once you arrive. Although you're supposed to have a local ID to buy one it's normally not too difficult to find someone (eg a tuk tuk driver) who will buy the card on your behalf.

Yeah, tuk-tuk or others charge $20-$25 (USD) to get a $5 SIM card. There is a tourist card available but only lasts a week for about $12.

Survived a couple of weeks there without one. Most calls can be made through the Internet shops for about 500 riel/min--still expensive but found it much cheaper than buying a SIM card unless one chats a lot.

MAnaged to buy one with a bit of begging from a shop at market centeral (North side). Cost us ten us for a 017 card. Seems to work in my phone from Denmark no problem. The shop told us to keep secret the sim card tho.....

Hi, I bought one from a shop in Ban Lung, Ratanakiri with no hassle. I'd just come in from Laos and wasn't aware that there were restrictions on buying sim cards. She did take a photocopy of my passport (which I found strange for a prepaid sim - but now understand).

So might be worth just asking in a shop - especially in smaller places?
