I'm interested in visiting Preah Vihar, which is supposed to be a slog to get to from the Cambodian side. Does anyone know if it's possible to enter from the Thai side and spend a couple of nights at a guesthouse near the temple? I want to be around for dawn and sunset.

I visited Preah Vihar in Dec 2007. When passing board I wasn't asked to show my passport :)
I paid 5 THB on Thai side and get receipt. Then I crossed the border without any question. On Cambodian side I was asked only to buy ticket to enter the temple. While returning to Thailand I wasn't asked about my passport or other documents nor from Cambodian officials, nor from Thai officials.

To my knowledge the closest town with accommodation is Kantharalak, in Si Saket province -- it's straightforward to arrange a motorbike taxi from there to the ruins -- figure 200-300B return.

Unfortunately we don't cover Kantharalak on Travelfish as we went there before we started the site, but I can tell you it has a couple of more than adequate hotels in the under 600B range -- there's also a great little restaurant by the bus station that does a killer Tom Yam Goong!

Kantharalak hotels--would those be the Palace and the MK? Sounds like the town is an easy bus ride from Ubon Rachathani.

Yeah it's an easy bus ride from Ubon. Sorry, but I don't remember the names of the hotels -- neither was particularly memorable.

I visited Preah Vihar via Kantalarak last September.Just opposite the bus station is a pharmacy, the girl in there was educated in the U.S.A. and speaks perfect English.She is very helpful and will answer all your queries re hotels travel etc.

fgebhart, I haven't seen any guesthouses around the temple because I didn't plan to stay on Cambodian side and just not looked for accommodation :)

No problem, Vlad. I'll keep fingers crossed when I get there. Things are likely to change quickly anyway if the Cambodian government ever gets the promised road built.
