Australian family of 4 looking for alternative and interesting routes from PP to coast near PQ island. Don't mind a bit of "roughing it" as long as it is reasonably safe, rewarding and not too taxing for us 50 year olds ...the teenage kids will cope!? Hoping to do the PP-PQ Island-HCM City loop in 6 days with 3 days on the island...are we pushing it? Great thing this Travelfish...was impossible to get such support and insight when we backpacked Asia in early 90's...thanx to all involved in this fellowship of travellers...cheers Stveo

Gday Steve,
Sounds like a bit of a rush if you want to spend 3 days in PQ. You can catch a ferry/bus or fly to HCMC then return flight to PQ. Otherwise PP - Kampot - Rach Gai(via Ha Tien border xing) - PQ - Rach Gai - HCMC. I think the 2nd option would be rushing. How long can you sit in a Cambodian Camry for? You may be able to get driver all the way from PP to Ha Tien skipping Kampot then negotiate driver to Rach Gai from there. Hope you are spending time in HCMC!
Have fun

Would agree with Husko on the time issue.
See the tail end of this story for transport info on the Kampot - Phu Quoc leg.
With six days another "Vietnam-heavy" option could be:
day 1 leave PP, fast boat to Chau Doc and overnight
day 2 hang out in Chau Doc for dawn boating (it's worth dragging yourself out of bed for), then get a bus to Can Tho and overnight
day 3 Can Tho floating markets leave by early afternoon, bus to Rach Gia and overnight
day 4 boat to Phu Quoc
day 5 & 6 PQ with flight to Saigon when you're done. If you don't want to fly it, direct bus from Rach Gia to HCM takes best part of a day.
Hope that helps & glad you like the site!
