Hi there, does anyone know if there is a ferry crossing at all between Sihanoukville or any other west coast area of Cambodia or Thailand (Trat etc) to Ko Samui. I had hoped to avoid going back to Bangkok.

No. There is no ferry route, you'll need to transit via Bangkok.
