Is it possible to head up river from Phnom Penh or Kompong Cham towards Kratie? Will be there in Jan/Feb, which is the dry season. Not sure if there are boats during this time?

There's no longer regular passenger boat traffic on this route -- in wet, or dry season. Bus or share taxi is the norm now.

I drove from PP to kompong cham and then on to kratie last week in the rain.
Road is terrible just out of PP then pretty good on to KC-about 3 easy hours drive.
then KC to kratie is a great road, most of the drive through rubber and tapioca plantations, another two or three hours.
Coming back including a lunch stop and a few fruit and frog stops was five hours without hurrying.
No boats anymore.
