Have searched and found older posts saying their is indeed no ferry but have been told by a couple of Thai's that there is a service running?
Anyone have any up to date information on this.
Any help appreciated.

What exactly did they tell you? Such a service would be of great interest to many here, I'm sure. Haven't heard of anything like that, and with the current state of Thai-Cambodian relations, it seems unlikely.

That's a pretty huge distance.... A ferry from Cambodia to Koh Chang would make a lot more sense.
I guess (in theory) it would be from Sihanoukville to Koh Samui? Never heard of such a thing and would guess it's a misunderstanding/miscommunication... there's ferries from Sihanoukville, Cambodia to Koh Kong at the Thai border.

It's about 400km across the Gulf of Thailand from Sihanoukville to Ko Samet. It would be too dangerous and take too long to ferry across it when there's good road almost the whole way. Boat travel is a luxury which is usually not an option if there is a decent road alternative in this part of the world. Still many people ask about it. Pipe dream.
