Hi
I'm planning on travelling to Thailand, Laos and Cambodia with my soon to be husband on a honeymoon trip in Nov-Dec this year. Could you recommend an itinerary for us (starting and finishing in Bangkok)? We only have 5 1/2 weeks and don't want to spend the whole time travelling so we need to find a route that will give us enough time to see the countries but not spend our lives on a bus!
Thanks in advance
Lucie

Hi Lucie,
Congratulations!
5 1/2 weeks should be long enough to get a good taste of the three countries. Here's one sample itinerary:
Bangkok -> Sukhothai
Sukhothai -> Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai -> Pai
Pai -> Mae Hong Son, fly back to Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai -> Chiang Rai
Chiang Rai -> Chiang Khong
Chinag Khong -> Huay Xai
Huay Xai -> Luang Prabang (by boat, with an overnight stay in Pak Beng)
Luang Prabang -> Vang Vieng
Vang Vieng -> Vientiane
Vientiane -> Pakse (long trip, overnight bus)
Pakse -> Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Island)
Si Phan Don -> Kratie (Cambodia)
Kratie -> Phnom Penh
Phnom Penh -> Siem Reap (For Angkor Wat)
Siem Reap -> Ko Chang/Ko Kut/Ko Maak (Thailand)
Islands -> Bangkok
Bangkok ->Krabi (fly)
Krabi -> Ko Phi Phi/ Lanta/ Raileh Beach etc
Beaches back to Bangkok and depart.
That has a lot of travel in it -- you could cut out the Pai/Mae Hong Son loop bit to save some time, or chose just one set of islands rather than two.
If you give me an idea on budget I can give you some suggestions for hotels that may be nice for a splurge...it is a honeymoon afterall!

Dear Ahteck81,
Hi! Since you asked, I think you are trying to fit far too much into your 13 days. I don't know how much money you have to spend, but I think you'd be much better off with something like this. You'll need to fly most of the time to be able to see all the things you want in such a short period. That will be expensive. Check out the travel pass options on Bangkok Airways. That might make it a bit more affordable.
Bangkok.
Ayutthaya.
Return to Bangkok airport for flight to Luang Prabang.
Fly to Chiang Mai.
Fly to Sukhothai.
Fly to Siem Reap (via Bangkok)
Bus to Phnom Penh for return to KL.
This means you would skip Nong Khai and Vientiane, but even doing your trip this way I think you'll be spending too much time travelling and not enough sightseeing and enjoying yourself. Good luck.

As a follow up to the above, I see that Siem Reap Airways (essentially the same as Bangkok Airways) lists 3 flights per week on their website from Luang Prabang to Siem Reap (but oddly enough none in the other direction). Because of that, a better itinerary for you might be Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Luang Prabang, Siem Reap, Phnom Penh. If you really wanted to see Sukhothai, you could pop up and see it from Ayutthaya and then either return to Bangkok or continue to Chiang Mai for the flight to Luang Prabang. It used to be that Siem Reap Air had a flight from Sukhothai directly to Luang Prabang, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Still, worth checking into when you are in the area. Regards
