In SE Asia there aren't many that compare to FMP and VV-Tubing tourist-wise, but Songkran (Thai New Year in mid-April) is slowly going that way. The difference is it's been celebrated by Thais for many many years before westerners arrived so the deterioration into mayhem is still being staved-off a bit by those locals who still respect the customary light flicking of water and light patting-down of talcum powder or perfume in peak hot season. That said, it's getting harder over the recent years not to get an abrupt 5-litre bucket of ice water thrown in your face or aggressive smearing of Johnson&Johnson during those few days a year. Especially crazy in Chiang Mai along the city moat for almost a full week.
