overland border crossings - laos to cambodia - please help!

    does anyone have any info on the overland border crossing from laos to cambodia? i have heard that it is semi-official/not always open? what can you do if this is not open/are there other ways to get between these countries? we thought we would maybe have to leave laos and go into Thailan dat Savannakhet , then through that Eastern area of Thailand and into cambodia at Poipet to get to Siam reap? but that seems like a very long way round and (am i right about this?) we would have to get a multiple entry visa for thailand if we are entering from laos as well? any help asap would be much appreciated, i need to get thailand visa very soon so need to know if i will need multiple entries to do this? thanks

    It is a full internatinal crossing and is fully official. Short of the Lao or Cambodian govts deciding to close it there is no reason why it will not be open.
