We posted a separate Yunnan trip itinerary in this board.
This post concerns National Day Holidays and what to expect.
We know nothing - zip, nada, empty headed - about the China National Holiday. We will be in this area around thattime:
Lijiang – 3 days – by local bus (fromQiatou/Tiger Leaping Gorge)
Shaxi – 5 days – by local bus from above
Question: This period coincides with National Day Holidays from, we think, 1 October to end of the next week. We have read that all of China is on the move and in the holiday spirit! Best advice – Do we need to make reservations in advance in Lijiang and Shaxi? And what about guides for treks if we want to go thatway? Will they be there or off in their home town.
Can someone paint a picture for us of the National Day Holidays in this area?

National Day-Week is a time for middle & upper-class families to go and enjoy a holiday, and many will make there way to Yunnan as that is a great time of year to head there. You can expect a lot more tourists in in Lijiang than otherwise and you'll certainly want to make reservations if only to save yourself a lot of time wandering around looking for a nice place to stay. Though not run by a Naxi family I recommend Panba Guesthouse as a nice place to stay (http://www.panba.com.cn/panbaen/web/content.asp?id=2186).
As for guides, I haven't been to Lijiang myself during the holiday but you can expect they plan to charge extra as its peak season and many will put off their own holiday in order to make cash on all the families coming into town. The public holidays are really only important for government workers and your white collar jobs - shops and service industry will make there money at this time so don't expect any closings. What you have to worry about is transportation that will be more expensive, a little difficult to get some palaces on a bus, or hostels.
National Day isn't as big a deal to close your shop and see family as say Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) when travel and food can be a real problem. If you're around for Mid-Autumn Festival (Sept 10t - 12th in 2011) then you'll get a chance to have some moon cakes but otherwise you shouldn't have too much difficulty even then.

Thanks for the reply - we appreciate the advice and have stored the GH information away for reference.
In another place a LP Thorn Tree poster recommended that during National Day Holidays in this area we would be better to "bunker" down in a smaller place for the duration of the holiday. So ... putting that and you own advice together we will attempt to get to Lijiang the day before the start of the holiday (stay there 3 days) and then move on into Shaxi for the remainder of the holiday period and stay put for the remaining 6 days (including the weekends). This would suit as we plan to walk/trek for at least 3 days in that area. We will make reservations for both places in advance. To catch up we will then fly from Dali to Jianhong for the boat down the Mekong to Thailand.
Our excitement grows daily - and the start of the trip is still 3 months away - we have not been to China since a 6 week trip in 1995 and that was mainly in the north, with just 5 days in Kunming. How things must have changed in that time we bet! We will miss Mid-Atutmn Festival - what a shame really!
