hi all-
i've really enjoyed reading this forum over the last few days! a friend + are are preparing for a trip to se asia in may/june + i thought i'd post our tentative itinerary here + see if anyone has suggestions... my main question- is this even feasible in 5 weeks?! i dont want to be on the move every single day, but theres so much to see + do- i'm having a hard time cutting things out! (BTW- this started out as a 5 week trip to thailand + maybe angkor wat)

Bangkok -> Siem Reap (BUS) 2 days angkor wat
Siem Reap -> Saigon (FLY?) 2-3 days saigon
Saigon ->Hanoi (FLY or train) 1-2 days hanoi
Hanoi -> Ha Long Bay (BUS) 2 days halong bay
Hanoi-> Bangkok (FLY) overnight BKK
Bangkok - Chiang Mai/Rai (BUS) 4-5 days trekking
Chiang Mai/Rai - Chiang Khong (BUS)
Chiang Khong - Pakbeng (BOAT?)
Pakbeng - Luang Prabang (BOAT?) 3 days on boat
Luang Prabang - Vang Vieng (BUS) 4-5 days luang prabang
Vang Vieng - Vientiane (BUS) 3-4 days vang vieng
Vientiene - Bankgkok (bus/train) 1 day vientienne
Some beach destination to be determined in so. thail for 7 days

Hi cynko,

Seems to be quite a bit of to-ing and fro-ing to/from Bangkok. A 'loop' would be a simple option.
I personally wouldn't spend 3-4 days in Vang Vieng and if your into temples you may be better off spending the extra time for Angkor

Maybe:
BKK-Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai-Chiang Khong-Pakbeng-Luang Prabang
L Prabang-Hanoi (Fly, Lao Air now do the route)
Halong Bay
Saigon-Mekong Delta-Phnom Penh
Siem Reap
BKK-Beach

Just a thought....................

Good suggestion from steviej -- here's another idea:

Once you get to Hanoi:
Hanoi -> Ha Long Bay (BUS) 2 days halong bay
Hanoi-> Luang Prabang (FLY)
Luang Prabang - Vang Vieng (BUS) 4-5 days luang prabang
Vang Vieng - Vientiane (BUS) 3-4 days vang vieng
Vientiane - Nong Khai (BUS)
Nong Khai - Bangkok (train)

Then you've got a lot more time for islands ;-)
