My girlfriend and I are traveling in Southeast Asia right now. We have heard great things about 4,000 Islands in Laos and the islands off the coast of Sihanoukville. We fly out of Hanoi on June 15th and plan to visit northern Laos, Siem Reap, and go up the coast of Vietnam. I was wondering where a good place to be to kick back and relax for a few days. Would early wet season/hot season affect our experience in 4,000 Islands? I've read that Cambodia's wet season really picks up later in the summer, though it starts in May. If we decide against both of them, we will probably just relax in Nha Trang or Mui Ne in Vietnam. Anyone have any thoughts?

During the wet season the Mekong rises, and many of the smaller islands get submerged, but it won't affect the main islands of 4,000. It isn't exactly a place with beaches, more of a party scene with some floating on tubes - I think it is certainly worth a stop if you aren't on a tight schedule though and plan on heading through Southern Laos on your way to Siem Reap anyway. Can't speak for the coast of Sihanoukville, but I've heard good things - if you've got the time I think it'd be a good reason to extend a stay in Cambodia, a country many people only see Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.
Otherwise, if you are willing to wait, Nha Trang is supposed to have a nice beach, though some who I've known to visit have been a little disappointed when comparing it to their experiences on Thai Islands. That said, Da Nang is also a nice place to stop if you want the comforts of an urban environment to go along with a couple days of beach and renting a motorbike to catch Hoi'an, Marble Mountain, and Monkey Mountain day trips.

Thanks! As long as the 4,000 Islands are worth it in early wet season, I think we'll stop there (flying is super expensive anyway). The islands off Cambodia look nice too, I think I'd be OK cutting out the beaches in Vietnam if we are short on time at the end.
