I'm looking for things to watch as I envision what my travels to SE Asia will be like. I am interested in Theravada Buddhism monasteries, scuba diving, service work, and any backpacking, hiking, white water experiences. I am thinking about living in N Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, or Bali. Thanks in advance!
Journey into Buddhismis a good three-part documentary by John Bush that covers Buddhism, spirit worship and such in Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Bali/Java, and Tibet. I enjoyed watching those a few years back while preparing for a big SE Asia trip that included a lot of time spent in monasteries.
These aren't documentaries, but some good films to prepare and learn something about SE Asia are:
Last Life in the Universe (cool artsy Thai-Japanese flick set in modern Bangkok)
6ixtynin9 (hilarious and somewhat disturbing Thai movie set in modern Bangkok)
The Legend of Suriyothai (historical Thai language epic about Thailand in 1700s, I'm pretty sure it's still the highest budget Thai movie ever made)
The Killing Fields (initially an award winning book but also a well-done film on the late '70s Cambodia genocide)
The Scent of Green Papaya (Artistic and poignant Vietnamese film set in 1960s Saigon)
I can't think of any really good travel documentaries on SE Asia (I'm sure there are some out there). If interested in India, The Story of India is a great one.
