Hong Kong --> Vietnam Or Thailand. What would you choose? =) Thanks
23rd June, 2012
My name is Seven Ten and I am currentlyin Hong Kong. I love this place, but it's time for me to move on to S.E. Asia!
I'm debating whether to fly to Thailandor Vietnam first...
On 11/18, Monday, the plane ticket to Hanoi , Vietnam via Kayak is ~250. I chose Hanoi because I want tostart from the North and make my way down South.
On the same date, flying into Bangkokwould be much cheaper, ~150.
Normally I would go with the cheaperalternative, but I'm thinking that it will be easier for me to get myVietnam visa in HK, than on the road. Also, Vietnam is on eastern side of the region, making it a good starting point.
But I do save ~100 usd...
Thanks for reading! Take care Everyone.

I'm a little biased since Hanoi is my very favorite place in SE Asia. I assume you've never been to the area? Bangkok is great, and similar to HK in that it's very developed and impressive to the first timer. Hanoi, on the other hand, is cruder/poorer and still developing to the higher standards. It's my belief that Vietnam is the friendliest country in SEA, but naturally it has a few problems too. The decision is up to you.
Kayak is not always the best place to look for tickets in SEA. I would try Vietnam Airlines direct.

You don't mention whether-or-not you're going back to Hong Kong, or if you're going to purchase a one-way ticket. I'm guessing one-way.
But, if you are purchasing a roundtrip ticket, I would choose Bangkok just to avoid having to purchase another, or more expensive, Vietnamese visa when you have to get back there for your flight.

Thanks Daawgon. I'll check out Vietnam Airlines. After a lot of big cities, Hanoi sounds like the perfect place for me. But 100 is still a lot and if I go to Thailand first, I'll still end up in Hanoi, just toward the end of my trip. The feel/flow of it would be different...I'll have to think about it. Anyway, thanks for your input!
It's one way Tilapia. I might go back to HK to find work, but I also might go somewhere else...maybe Nepal. Ran into a lot of backpackers that hiked to the base camp of Everest. Awesome right!? Thanks for sharing.
