Right, my gf and i are doing 3 months (sept, oct, nov) in the area (and i know people say not to plan too much, but.....)
We do Bangkok, chang mai, chang rai, down mekong to laos ending up in Vientianne
RIGHT, but want to do Hanoi and down coast of vietnam, cambodia AND southern laos (4 thousand islands etc)!!! Then back round to do southern thailand!!!????
What do people reckon is best way??
1. Suck it and see
2. Vientianne to Hanoi, then cut in and out to do 4 thousand islands
3. All way through laos, into Cambodia, and UP through Vietnam

I am Thai people, live in Chiang Mai. I just finished the international tourist guide course at Chiang Mai University. If you think I can help you to arrange your trip, please do not hesitate to tell me at deleted

Many Thanks for the advice on the trip, very handy, but may still go from Vientianne to Hanoi and duck back into Laos when travelling down coast (as only 4 thousand islands on plan south of Vientianne). Unless anyone can suggest anything different
Once you're in Vientiane, fly/or overland to Hanoi, come down the Vietnamese coast to Saigon, cross into Cambodia by going up the river at Chau Doc and continue onto Phnom Penh and do your stuff in Cambodia. When finished there, head north through Cambodia to enter Laos at the Voen Kham crossing near 4,000 islands, continue to the islands then on to Pakse and exit back into Thailand at the Chong Mek crossing for Ubon Ratchathani.

Hi bliprogers,
Welcome to Travelfish!
If you re-arrange your trip a little, you should be able to see it all -- see this trip plan as an example.

Glad it helped -- how about something like this?:
Once you're in Vientiane, fly/or overland to Hanoi, come down the Vietnamese coast to Saigon, cross into Cambodia by going up the river at Chau Doc and continue onto Phnom Penh and do your stuff in Cambodia. When finished there, head north through Cambodia to enter Laos at the Voen Kham crossing near 4,000 islands, continue to the islands then on to Pakse and exit back into Thailand at the Chong Mek crossing for Ubon Ratchathani.

Cheers Somtam,
Sounds like a good way to do it. I'm a little excited about the trip now :-)
