I am pt. in Hanoi and have 25 days on my own before picking up my friend in Bangkok. I was thinking to go to southern Laos (did the tourist trail from Thailand through Houay Xai, Pak Beng, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng, Vientiane four years ago) - would like to see Wat Phu and Si Phan Don.
But what else to do?
Is there enough to keep me busy in Southern Laos for a good three weeks - getting a bit off the beaten track could be exciting - and will it be accessible within a reasonably tight budget for a single traveller?
Or will I be better of spending a week or so on Wat Phu and Si Phan Don and then head to Bangkok and jump on an Air Asia cheap flight to Singapore, and then travel around Peninsular Malaysia for a couple of weeks (I know Travelfish doesn't cover Malaysia, but maybe you have an opinion anyway)?
Any opinions?
Thanks in advance!
You could spend three weeks in southern Laos easily -- Tha Khaek, Savannakhet and Pakse are all worth a couple of days, then up to Tad Lo for two days or so, and perhaps over to Attapeu for a few more. Then you've got Wat Phu (one night) and say at least 4-5 nights island hopping in Si Phan Don -- that's pretty close to three weeks once you factor in travel time.
But then you just had to go and confuse the equation by throwing in Malaysia ;-)
Penang and the Perenthians are two of my all-time-faves as well, but if I had to choose, I'd hang out in Southern Laos...

Hi kittywoo,
What does pt. mean?

Hi Somtam,
thanks for your very helpful comment. I think I'll stick to Laos to avoid rushing, and also to avoid straining my budget...
pt. means something like 'at the moment' in Danish, didn't realise it didn't work in English...
