After surfing the proverbial Wed and picking up a few pieces of info, it came to be that carrying a ATM card as your main source of cash could be catastrophic if the card was retained by the ATM. Has anybody been unfortunate enough to suffer from this and if so what happens next?
I'm now contemplating opening another bank account just in case!!!!

If you travel alone this could be a problem. If you travel with a partener you can have two cards on the same account(joint account). When I travel alone I always take a Credit card with me for emergency which I keep separate to my Debit card.

Banks can always send you a new card if need be, you just have to hang around in one place until they send it (usually a week). This is where travellers cheques can come in handy, I always carry them for these sort of emergencies.
