This is the itinerary:
29/11 Arrive Phnom Penh
30/11 PP – Kratie
1/12 Kratie
2/12 Kratie – Don Khong
3/12 Don Khong
4/12 Don Khong – Pakse via Wat Phu Champasak
5/12 – 8/12 Bolaven Plateau by motorbike
8/12 Pakse – Tha Khaek (VIP night bus)
9/12 Caves etc around Tha Khaek by motorbike
10/12 Tha Khaek – Vientiane
11/12 – 12/12 Vientiane
13/12 Vientiane – Vang Vieng
14/12 Vang Vieng
15/12 Vang Vieng – Luang Prabang
16/12 – 18/12 LP
19/12 LP – Siem Reap
20/12 Angkor
21/12 Angkor – PP
22/12 PP and flight home
What do you think?
I've already booked the flight from Luang Prabang to Siem Reap, but the rest of the itinerary is still open to change.
I've been to Angkor once before, thus the brief visit this time.
Could I safely skip the Tha Khaek portion and head straight from Pakse to Vientiane? If I did, how long would the bus trip Pakse-Vientiane take? Would it be worth my while to fly?
Is two days in Vientiane excessive?
Anything else?
Any constructive comments much appreciated.
(Cross-posted on the Cambodia branch).

I'd say Tha Khaek is worth the stop, because Konglor cave is well worth a looksee -- if anything you could give it an extra day...if you can scrape up one from somewhere else.
Otherwise looks good -- Vientiane is certainly worth two days.
(I moved this thread to the Indochina section and deleted the cambo post, please don't cross-post.)
Cheers!

Apologies. Didn't know that was a rule.
Thanks for the advice. Was unsure about Vientiane - some people don't seem to regard it too highly.
I understand there are still flights from Savannakhet to Vientiane, but what about from Pakse? IS the airport open?
I can't seem to find a conclusive answer to this last question, which has apparently been the object of some interest recently.

No worries on the dup post.
As far as I know, Pakse airport is still closed. Last I heard was an opening date sometime in January. The Lao Airlines site still marks it as closed -- you'd hope they know!
