Hi there - this may be a dumb question that no-one can answer for me, but I have to make a snap decision about whether to book flights to Indonesia or Malaysia for 3 weeks in December. Don't have time to do research and wonder which would be best for family of 5 (3 adolescent boys) on small-ish budget. We like less crowded places, to have a mixture of exploring towns and beach-time (good beaches as we are from NZ and quite spoilt in that way) and are happy travelling on local buses and trains (Thailand was a great success for us). Would greatly appreciate some advice. Thanks.
Not sure you're still able to make a snap decision given that you posted this 2 weeks ago, but Indo is a good choice. But Malaysia is more manageable with only 3 weeks to spend. Indonesia is one of those places that requires a lot of time to travel around. Having said that, it'd be easy to fly into bali, cruise around for a while and the start heading west across Java and then onto Sumatra... and when you're done there, fly back to Bali for your flight home.

Mooball is right. Indonesia is too big to travel around only in 3 weeks. For example if u like Diving, there are many diving spot there including dangerous one. U can dive at Bali, Lombok and Thousand Island (safest place to dive) or u can go wilder at Bunaken, Manado (Sulawesi Island) or Raja Ampat at Papua. or other place near Bangka Belitung Island. Other spot to dive is near Padang, Sumatera Island there are Island 1 hour go from Padang.
