Hi
We have 5 nights in solo so plenty of time to see local things. We also want to buy furniture to ship home. Any ideas for things to do in 3 days in the area between solo and Surabaya where we fly home from?? Thanks

in between Solo and Yogya there is only Perambanan-mind you, it is just 50/60 kms with 4-6 buses per hour and also near hourly trains (these also sto at Yogya airport and prambanan). Solo is quite nice and shoud have enogh little things to keep you amused for 2-3 days-hire a bike and just peddle along, much more real old-style Indo as tourist-overhelmed Yogya.
Between Solo and Surabaya(spend as little time in that rotten town as possible) along the direct route there is ,well, uh nothing-interesting-unless you like old steam small engines that draw sugar cane harvest-only in the right season. The grave of a mr. Sukarno, still much admired and adore by many Indo's, is a little off that route.
Make a detour via Malang- a very nice hilly=cold old retreat-style laid back town, not that much to see, but plenty of old-style atmosfere. use a prebooked travel minibus to go Solo-Mlg, use a Bas ekspres Mlg-SBY (ev 10 mins or so), and at the big busstation in SBY you can find -some- direct buses to airport-no need to go into town even!
Guidebooks may tell you about the joys of some seaside town southside of Java-can do, but I found it really disappointing.
