Two bombs in Jakarta

Posted by somtam2000 on 17/7/2009 at 09:13 admin

Breaking news reports this morning are covering the apparent bombing of the Ritz Carlton and Marriott Hotels in Jakarta. At the moment there are reports of six dead -- though that may well increase.

It took CNN all of about thirty seconds to start rabbiting on about Al-Qaeda, but being so close to the just concluded elections there could be any number of parties behind these explosions, including disgruntled elements of the armed forces.

Given this happened just an hour or so ago, there's not too much in the way of analysis just yet, but I'll add some links in as I find them.

Sounds terrible. Which Ritz? And assume the JW Marriott? Thoughts with families of victims.

Yup, JW Marriott and it's the new Ritz (the one across from the Stock Exchange).

MetroTV (an Indonesian TV channel) has already released the names and addresses of some of the dead -- outrageous.

Car explodes in North Jakarta

The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Fri, 07/17/2009 11:23 AM | Jakarta
A passenger car explodes near a toll gate in Muara Angke, North Jakarta, on Friday morning. It was not confirmed whether the explosion was related to the fatal explosions that hit two hotels earlier in the morning.

Detik.com news portal reported that two were killed in the explosion.

Wahyu, a Police Mobile Brigade officer told The Jakarta Post that an explosion just happened at Muara Angke toll gate at 10.45.

"Yes we heard from a radio about the explosion. We haven't been informed yet about fatalities," he said at the JW Marriot.

Wahyu said that officers were deployed to the site to investigate the explosion.

Two fatal explosions at Marriot and Ritz-Carlton luxury hotels in Mega Kuningan business district earlier in the morning killed at least nine people. (bbs)

There's a good report on Al Jazeera including an eye witness report and video.

Sayadian -- I'd venture Jakarta should be avoided like the plague regardless of if there are bombs going off there!

I don't know Jakarta, never had a desire to visit but probably the whole of Indonesia will be tarred by this particular brush and visiters will be deterred from going to places like Bali.
Undoubtedly this is a tragedy but it will be over-egged by governments hence my 'ironic' comment above.
....and the terrorists always win by definition because they spread fear and uncertainty.

The prime suspect for the bombings has just been shot dead by the Indonesian police in a house raid ...

Going by the TV coverage, he wasn't shot dead, he was slaughtered by a repeated hail of machine gun fire.

The building in which he was allegedly hiding (and received the gunfire) was so shot up it wouldn't protect an ant situated in the centre of the building from rainfall.

Given the reputation of this fella, I hope the Indo police were right. But, with so much SAF, I doubt he'd be recognisable.

Cheers

Today there seems to be some doubt whether Noordin Mohammed Top was actually killed in the raid...some sources say that the dead man was an associate of his, not the man himself. It'll take 3 days to do the DNA testing.

Al Jazeera also has a video of the 17 hour raid on the farmhouse where he was supposed to be hiding out. On it they mention that 500kgs of explosives destined to be used on "specific targets in two weeks time" were also found in another raid on a house near Jakarta ...

There are often travel warnings of "imminent terrorist attacks" in Indonesia that usually come to nothing. However if that wasn't the body of Noordin Top they took away after the raid, then the risk factor may have just climbed a few notches.

Yes, looks like it wasn't him -- we'll have to but the champagne back in the fridge...
