Combining gibbon experience and slow boat?

Posted by Livingthedream on 4/7/2010 at 18:14

Im travelling to Laos in Oct, was planning to cross the border from Thailand at Huay Xai and get the slow boat down to LuangPrabang. However now were hoping to fit in the Gibbon experience too, how do you get to it from Huay Xai? and if we still want to get the slow boat whats the best way to go about it, after gibbon experience would we have to backtrack to Huay Xai and stay a night to catch boat in the morning?
Thanks!

The Gibbon Experience is north of Huay Xai off of the main road to Luang Namtha and yes you would have to backtrack to Huay Xai to get the slow boat but it often doesn't actually depart until almost noon (in spite of a 10:00 AM listed time) so you might make it the same day. Another option would be to continue north on Hwy 3 after the Gibbon visit and stay a couple days in Luang Namtha, then head onward by road to Luang Prabang , with possible stops in Oudom Xai or Nong Kiew on the way. The mid-sized local buses are my first choice. From Nong Kiew you could take a boat trip down the Nam Ou River to Luang Prabang and forget the bus. You won't meet many Lao people on the slow boat from Huay Xai to LP but this other route will give you a chance to rub elbows with local hilltribe people.
