We were hoping to travel from phnom penh to vientiane going along the mekong river. Is that possible and if so should we get our visas beforehand or at the border? If it is not possible can anyone sugest alternative arrangements ie by bus or train.

You can do the trip by bus if you have the time, and its probably better to get you visas beforehand. However, I crossed the border with the passengers of 2 other minibuses, and if even 1 of those people doesn't have a visa, you will have to wait for them. Not sure about the trip by the Mekong.
