By the time I hit Vientiane, I might have to get back to Bangkok in a hurry. I understand how the carry out the border crossing, and I'd probably go with the train from Nong Khai in most cases. However this time I need to rush back to Bangkok on a certain day to pick someone up from the airport. I am thinking of catching the Sabaidee bus from Vientiane, so I can reach Bangkok by 6am the next morning.
1. How is this bus? I'm not too fussed. As long as it's not a scam, I'm happy.
2. Do they run everyday? Can I buy it from anywhere in Vientiane (e.g. my guesthouse)? Can I/Do I have to prebook?
1. Bus is good - no scam
2. Yes service is everyday and I believe you can get the tickets from just about anywhere in Vientiane -- I'd say unlikely need to pre-book -- but that's a guess ;-)

I'd never thought of flying until you mentioned it ;) Checked out Thai AirAsia and they have a very cheap flight at a time which is good for me.
AirAsia in Singapore and Malaysia are known for their terrible planes and atrocious delays. I have heard good things about Thai AirAsia though. I can't afford to lose time as (1) I need to pick up an international flight coming at 18:55 (2) Thai Asia Udon Thani-BKK lands at 18:40.
In your experience, how is the delay situation with Thai AirAsia?

the bus is fast:) we reached Khao San road ,Bangkok at 430am.
The ticket will say it departs at 5pm from the fountain at Vientiane but it didn't arrive til almost 6. At the laos border , you will transfer to the actual double decker VIP bus.

your other option of course is to fly from Udon Thani, though that wouldn't get you to the airport as early as you want
