First of all Id like to say thanks to all these amazing comments & feedback on this forum from some notable Laos travellers! Have gathered some great info for my trip end of this month!
I have been trying to find info on other forms of transport from Vientiane to Vang Vieng other than the early morning buses ... as Air Asia has yet again delayed our flight schedule times and now we arrive 6hrs later than expected - and therefore miss the last bus that seems to be at 1:30pm in the afternoon. We do not have time to stay extra night in Vientiane and want to head straight to Vang Vieng (there is a group of 12-15 of us!) - can anyone suggest some options - maybe hiring costs of a couple of drivers or tuk tuks (dont know if they travel that far!) or private buses??
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Can probably squeeze into two minivans if you don't have too much luggage. Reasonable cost would be around $100 per van to V V.
Here's a competent driver I have used in Vientiane who speaks good English and can probably organise two vans:

You should also be aware that every single bus leaving the Northern Bus Station has to pass through Vang Vien, no matter where it is headed in the north. I've yet to see a bus driver who won't squeeze in just 12 more passengers.
