Hi
Just arrived in Luang Prabang and in a few days will travel north but want to start with the river trip west. Wondering if anyone can advise if either of these roads is better in any way then the other. I may only get to do one.
Should I get off the boat at Pak Beng and go to Oudom Xai or continue to Houei Xai and take the road to Luang Namtha.

what is your destination/'overall route' (no idea if you are planning to loop back to LPB...or heading into China...or...) & time frame?
is it about the journey or the destination?
& what are you interested in seeing/doing?
some thoughts...
- rivers: Nam Ou far more scenic than the Mekong
- Mekong: LPB-Pak Beng relatively more scenic than Pak Beng-Huay Xai
- towns: Nong Khiaw more scenic than Pak Beng or Huay Xai
- roads: Huay Xai-LNT & Pak Beng-Oudomxay are both decent paved roads, former is slightly shorter (maybe 1h less), latter is far more 'off the beaten path'
