May is good, beginning of the rainy season though but still good enough to travel. loads of sun and the rain will cool you down when necessary.
it can get cold down south a little bit (at least that was with me 2 years ago).
2 weeks ago it was alright in and around Vientiane. about 30 to 35° C, not too much!
go for it and enjoy!

The rainy season appears to have started early. Yesterday was unbearably humid. Not much difference between May and June this year it appears.
