Hey...Im hoping to fly from Chaing Mai to Laos but am finding it really difficult to find flights or at least ones that are affordable..Im thinking of getting a train/bus from Phuket to Chiang Mai then flying from there as I dont want to miss out on Chiang Mai..
Does anyone know any other alternatives for flying to Laos from this area???
Thanks !!

Is it necessary that you fly? You can travel from Chaing Mai to Laos using buses and boats and it only takes about a day depending on where you stop off or whether or not you use the slow boat. Plus you'd be able to experience the scenery along the way.
You can find out information about buses and trains here http://www.seat61.com/Thailand.htm#Phuket which might help you plan your route and decide on the best course of action.
I was looking for flights from Laos to Vietnam but because Laos does not have a budget airline all flights are expensive, and so if you have the time then the best option is going to be travelling over land, otherwise you might have to pay the high prices to fly.
Either travel by bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong - cross the Mekong to Huay Xai and travel by slow boat via Pakbeng (overnight) to Luang Prabang. Will take 3 days most likely.
Or take the plane - Chiang Mai to LP - expensive but fast. Depends on how much time you've got and your view of the slow boat. The plane is expensive comparatively, but not THAT much more considering the other option can take 3 days.
Only Lao Airlines flies from Chiang Mai to Laos (to Luang Prabang and Vientiane) and it's not a low cost carrier. However, you can usually buy the flight cheaper from an agent in CM than on the Lao Airlines website. Potentially about $50 cheaper for CM-LP ($175 vs. 225)
