We will be traveling this summer in thailand/laos with kids, age 13 and 16, and are looking for a safe somwehat comforatble boat to Luang Prabang from Chiang Khong or Chiang Saen. The speedboats sound dangerous and the slow boats uncomfortable. Anything in between? thx

The slow boats aren't that uncomfortable - the seats in them are ripped out of a minivan and unlike the minivan you've got the scope to move around as much as you like. There were much younger European kids on our boat.
If anything's likely to make you uncomfortable it'll be singing British backpackers who've had way too much booze by mid-aftenoon, but a 13 year old and 16 year old will probably see the funny side.
There are pricey cruises on slightly better boats available.

I agree with enigmatic for the boat, but i find quiet nice to take 1 day boat to Pakbeng, sleep there, than 5 hours bus to Oudomxai and about 5 again to Nong Kiao, wich is a beautiful place near the river. From there, it will take you one more day by boat to Luang Prabang. A very nice trip if you have the time.
