wE are in Hanoi, we are planning the long trip into Loas. We want to go to Luang Prabang(spelling?) first, then work our way south.
We have been told that buses don't make this route. Is that true?
If so, can we get dropped off at Vang vieng or phu khun then head north to luang prabang.
HAS anyone else made this journey before and can help out on
- price
-standard of bus and road
-time the journey took
Any help will be great

Hi soccersimo,
If you take a look at the border crossing FAQ you'll get some info on thr border crossings between Vietnam and Laos. Of most use is probably this snippet:
"NamCan / Nam Khan crossing
border open 08:00-17:00
Convenient to Phonsavan in Laos and pretty much nothing in Vietnam, this crossing has been open for some time now, but is not much used by travellers due to the long stretch on the Vietnamese side down to Vinh. Lao visas on arrival are available.
There is a regular bus from Phonsavan (Laos) to Vinh (Vietnam) which leaves at 06:30 on Tuesday,Thursday, Friday and Sunday and takes about 13 hours to reach Vinh, costing 110,000 kip. It leaves Vinh the next day for the trip back. Expect all your bags to be checked on entering Vietnam."
From Phonsavan it is a fairly straightforward connection to Luang Prabang, and obviously you'd need to head south from Hanoi to Vinh to get the bus through to Phonsavan.
It's a long (at least a couple of days), but very pretty trip -- let us know how it goes.
