Hi there,

Am travelling to Thailand January next year. Have been and done the Phuket/koh samui thing and would like to experience the Northern Thailand/Laos/Vietnam thing.
I am not very familiar with the area so would love it if someone had a suggested itinerary for the 3 weeks I will be there? I would be happy to cut out areas to ensure that I had enough time in each place to properly enjoy it !
Would like to do the Gibbon experience, thats about all I know !
Thanks so much for your help

You'll probably hear this many times but 3 weeks for the 3/4 countries you mention will leave it very rushed and probably leave you stuck on uncomfortable buses for a good proportion of your journey. Hence I would recommend less is more. Some possible 3-week itineraries would be:
- Entirely Vietnam (my preference) - 3 weeks is a good amount of time to see decent chunks of the country,
- A loop from Chiang Mai back to Bangkok (you don't say where you are returning to), including Gibbon Exp, Luang Prabang, Vientiane, Southern Laos and Temples of Angkor.
Of course you could fly a lot between places but why rush and waste your money and not really see anywhere properly.
Good luck.

Not enough time for three countries. I would head to Nth Thailand and look at Udon Thani including the iron age site at Ban Chang. Then on to Nong Khai, Vientiane, Luang Prabang, the Plain of Jars and if you have back to Si Pan Don. I know this is backtracking a bit but at least you will have seen something of Isaan and quite a lot of Lao.

As is often the case, Rufus is right.
