Hey Guys,
Was wondering if I could get some advice on the weather in Laos (Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang) and Northern Thailand ( Chiang Mai ) in early to mid April. Is the smoke from the farmers burning unbearable?
Is it still a good time to go tubing or is the water level to low?
Also is Chiang Mai a good place to be in for Songkran? Does everything shut for these 2 days?
Thanks heappppppsss

Stinking hot! Chiang Mai has foreigners who behave very stupidly over Songkran. Some people think this is fun.

The broad flat valleys of Northern Thailand are little ovens in April. I have memories of the stupefying drone of the motorcycle as I attempt to cool myself with the air at 120km an hour and then coming to a town with a stop light and literally cooking on the tarmac.
Laos is slightly better. I get up before dawn and hide like some kind of insect mid day, staying hidden until the horrid sun goes down.
Ignore the smoke, it's just part of the deal.

We missed the hot season this year. Started raining mid-March and again during Songkran (people shivering on April 13th) and the "smoke" was similarly cleared out. But weather patterns are freaked out pretty much everywhere lately. Who knows about next year? Yes April can be the hottest time if no rains but the smoke issue is usually past by then. More of an issue Jan-Mar.
