Report from another forum.
Sounds like there has been a rather large landslide along HWY between Luang Prabang & Vang Vieng that is taking some time to clear.
Vehicles cannot pass, so passengers have to transfer between buses on either side of the landslide in order to continue with their journey.
Involves walking (& carrying all baggage) on an uphill/downhill (depending on direction of travel) path cleared across the landslide.
Be prepared for delays.
There is an article in the Vientiane Times about this but am not able to access it yet (is Rufus able to?).

from this blog post, the landslide seems to be between Kiew Kacham & Phou Khoun: http://alaventure.wordpress.com/2011/08/15/phonsavan-plains-of-jar-laos/
(author was travelling from Luang Prabang to Phonsavanh)
so travel between Vientiane/Vang Vieng & Phonsavanh shouldn't be affected.

Thanks Cat
Have "borrowed" some of those cool photos to show customers headed into north Laos during wet season. Good example of what deforestation plus heavy rain can do to your bus journey
